After three days of continued damage from the Black Forest, Colo., blaze, firefighters seem to have come to a “draw” with the fast-moving fire, which has killed two people and destroyed at least 360 homes. Within 36 hours, the Black Forest fire northeast of Colorado Springs surpassed the size of last year’s Waldo Canyon fire, which was considered the most destructive in the state’s history. About 1,000 homes were evacuated on June 13, and about 38,000 other people across 70 square miles were ordered to evacuate. The Royal Gorge Fire was 20 percent contained, but 48 of the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park’s 52 buildings were destroyed along with the aerial tram, though the suspension bridge still stands above the Arkansas River.
